MEEKER — And it blows
and blows some more. The
high winds have turned over
some sheds, damaged roofs
and ripped off siding.
Hopefully May will be a less
breezy sort of month.
Warmer weather is a
reminder that it’s time to think
about gardening. According to
the CSU Extension Office Web
site, Meeker’s 6,242 foot elevation
affords us an average
growing season of 91 days.
Keep that in mind when looking
at starting plants from seed.
With the price of food climbing,
planting a small vegetable garden
is a way to save some cash.
During the two world wars,
the U.S. Government advocated
“victory gardening” to
ensure adequate food supplies
for our troops and citizens. The
goal was to produce enough
fresh vegetables through the
summer for one’s immediate
family and neighbors. Any
excess produce was canned
and preserved for the winter
and early spring. Americans
worked together to turn vacant
lots, backyards, even baseball
fields and parks, into community
gardens.
A belated note of appreciation
to our dispatchers in honor
of National Public Safety
Telecommunicators week.
Art and Lila Cox recently
returned from a trip to visit five
of their grandkids and their
daughter and son-in-law, Laura
and Joseph Cardile, in
Wilmington, N.C.
Happy birthday this week
