Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 120 years ago
• The man who gets mad at what the newspaper says about him should return thanks three times a day for what the newspaper knew about him and suppressed.
• Rio Blanco County High School begins its first semester Oct. 2 in the new high school building.
• It is not generally known, but this is mighty fine honey country.
• A party of young people, in charge of Mr. David Smith, picnicked down the river yesterday.
• Ben Carver shot himself through the right foot on Sleepy Cat last weekend. He had been carrying a bed on one shoulder and a .22 caliber rifle on the other and was in the process of transferring the loads when the weapon exploded.
• Among the arrivals last Saturday was Thomas Kennedy, from Galesburg, Ill. Mr. Kennedy will visit the Murray boys and other friends.

The Meeker Herald – 50 years ago
• More than 230 miles of Colorado’s 948 mile interstate highway system were open to traffic on June 30.
• A contract is being signed this week confirming the employment by the Meeker Board of Education of Mr. Bob King of Mosca, Colo., as superintendent of schools.
• Miss Mary Ann Conrado became the bride of Jerry Carl Seely at a pretty church wedding which took place Sunday afternoon in St. James Episcopal church.
• The new district hospital in Rangely was dedicated last Sunday. This fine new 30-bed hospital was built at a cost of $680,000 and was completed in June.
• Nearly 40 boys turned out for the first grid practice of the season last Friday evening.

The Meeker Herald – 25 years ago
• Somewhat surprisingly, enrollment was up compared to the number of students who were in school this past spring. The RE-1 school district has 771 students.
• Members of the Rio Blanco County Historical Society were on hand at the dedication ceremonies at the White River Museum which saw the Territorial Daughters of Colorado present a bench. Twelve Colorado communities were selected to receive benches and Meeker was the first to receive one.
• Lower interest rates on Federal Land Bank loans were announced by Farm Credit Services. The majority of the preferred customers can receive a 12.0 percent rate.
• About 80 members of the Purkey family gathered in Meeker Sunday to observe Josephine Purkey’s 84th birthday and participate in a family reunion.

The Rangely Times – 45 years ago
• RE-4 school enrollment was totaled at 814 students in kindergarten through 12th grade for 1966.
• The Hogans–J.B., Joel and Audrey–scored three bucks this weekend from Blue Mountain. Joel’s buck had a 29 inch spread and the antlers were 29 inches high.
• CER Geonuclear Corp. announced last week that 15 oil companies had joined together to investigate the application of nuclear explosives in the recovery of oil from oil shale. Tentative plans call for firing of a nuclear explosive in early 1968 in shale deposits of the Piceance Basin.
• “Our hospital is new, yet almost debt-free, and can easily be enlarged to twice its present size.”
• Miss Cheryl Striegel, senior at Rangely High School, is the new high school correspondent for the Rangely Times.

The Rangely Times – 35 years ago
• Dale Hoops of Rangely was crowned Grand American Champion Trap Shooter after winning first place at the national trap shoot at Vandalia, Ohio.
• At the Campus Theatre: “Jaws” staring Roy Sheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss.
• “It was a little bit like heaven last Sunday as saints from several churches joined together in fellowship and priase of God as they commemorated those who have left us a rich Christian heritage.”
• You should have a good, strong signal on your portable FM radios. KREX-FM is broadcast daily for 18 hours.

The Rangely Times – 25 years ago
• CNCC staff reported an increase in full-time students to 374, an increase of 51 students.
• The new high school opened Tuesday morning. Many of the entering sophomore students have had the opportunity of attending each of the new schools built in Rangely over the past six years.
• The RHS Panthers opened the season with a 7-0 win over the Grand Junction JV jaycees. Mark Wilczek had 42 yards, Kyle Brown had 38 yards and Andy Harwood had 10 yards.
