Cross country team earns fourth at Basalt

Meeker’s Lathrop Hughes and Rangely’s William Scoggins get a quick start in a cross country race in Basalt. Matt Scoggins/Brooke Mantle

RANGELY I The Panther’s cross country teams competed in their second meet of season by getting up early Saturday morning and making the trek to Basalt to participate in the Longhorn Cross Country Invitational.  Seven schools were represented at the meet held at Cross Mountain Park and the weather was perfect for the relatively flat course. The boys’ team finished fourth in the meet while the girls didn’t have enough runners to score as a team. Coach Beth Scoggins said she was very pleased with how all the runners performed and excited to have the boys’ team compete so well. The first competition for the high school runners was the girls’ varsity race and Alexsis Silva was the lone Panther to toe the line. Perhaps a little overwhelmed by the sea of red from the 25 Glenwood girls lined up next to her, Silva was not shaken, though, in what was only her second cross country race ever. Silva finished in 36th place with a time of 31 minutes, 42 seconds and knocked more than four minutes off her previous best finish. The boys’ team lined up for their varsity race with three freshmen, one sophomore and one junior. A good showing in only their second year back with cross country at RHS, the boys were ready for the challenge. William Scoggins led the charge for the Panthers with a time of 17:26, earning himself a second place finish. With a strong race, Tanner Nielson finished in 13th place with a time of 19:43. In his first-ever cross country competition, Ethan Allred ran a gutsy race in a time of 21:14 and earned an 18th place finish.  Mitchell Webber is starting to find his stride and knocked more than a minute off his previous best time to finish in 21st place with a time of 21:53. Marshall Way had a personal best in this race as well, finishing in 32nd place while knocking more than 2 minutes off his previous best time.
