Governor proclaims April 6 as College Friday

In an effort to increase awareness about the importance of higher education and encourage Colorado students to pursue their dreams of college, Governor Hickenlooper proclaimed Friday, April 6 as College Friday. College Friday is an effort that was launched by College In Colorado in 2006.
On College Friday, all Coloradans are encouraged to wear apparel from their alma mater or favorite college to work or school to help raise awareness about the importance of higher education. The day is designed to support Colorado students on their path to college.
“By 2018 67 percent of jobs in Colorado will require a postsecondary education. Now more than ever is the time for our Colorado students to continue their education beyond high school. As a community, we need to remind our Colorado students that higher education is tangible and that we are supporting their future dreams,” said Dawn Taylor Owens, executive director of College In Colorado. “College Friday is a fun and easy way to open the door to the conversation about pursuing higher education.”
This year, College In Colorado anticipates College Friday participation from more than 150,000 participants statewide at businesses, schools and organizations. Any school, business or organization can easily participate.  Event highlights include:
n Waived application fees: During the week of College Friday (April 2-9) CSU Global Campus will waive their application fee and will have the opportunity to speak first generation college students about their own college experience and path

Colorado ranks in the top five states nationwide for the greatest number of degree holders per capita, yet only one in five Colorado ninth-grade students will earn a college degree, ranking the state in the bottom quartile nationally.
