RHS track team holds on to trophy

For the first time in several years, a high school track meet was held in Rangely last Friday where several athletes earned personal records and the boys’ team won the meet, keeping the first place trophy in town.

RANGELY I Last weekend was Rangely’s  very own “Rangely Open” track meet.  Even though it was a very small meet, the majority of the Panther athletes continued to excel in their times, distances, heights and lengths.
Highlights include junior athlete Holly “Le PRO” getting a gold and a PR (personal record) in both her events. She threw 35-01.75 in shot put and set a new school meet record. She also PR’d in discus with a distance of 104-06, more than three feet longer than her previous personal best.
Juniors Colton Coombs and William Scoggins both PR’d in in their events. Coombs ran a 24.18  200-meter dash and Scoggins broke the Panther meet record in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:13.15.
Sophomores Aimee Hogan and Tessa Slagle cut time in both of their running events. Hogan ran a 2:37.36 in the 800-meter run and took four seconds off the mile run with a time of 6:00.11. Slagle ran her fastest 400-meter dash with a time of 1:13.77 and took six seconds off her 3200-meter run with a new personal best time of 13:41.72.
Dual sport athlete Leslie Hernandez started the meet with a beautiful solo of the National Anthem, then stepped up and ran her fastest time in the 200-meter dash with a time of 33.08, and threw the discus for the first time ever with a distance of 53-05.
Freshman James Scoggins ran a 2:59-53 in the 800-meter run and threw his personal best in discus with a distance of 59-08.
Athletes of the week for are freshman Ethan Allred for his awesome work ethic and contribution during each meet and junior Leslie Hernandez for being dedicated to the track team when she can. The final highlight to the meet was having the girls’ team tie for second place overall and the boys keeping the meet trophy where it belongs with a first place spot.
The next meet will be at Battle Mountain next weekend with regionals the following weekend in Grand Junction.
