Obituary: Jamie Bates

Jamie Bates
Dec. 2, 1927~Nov. 7, 2008
Longtime Meeker resident Jamie Bates, 80, died Nov. 7, 2008, at the Larchwood Inn in Grand Junction. A native of Meeker, Jamie had moved to Fruita and Grand Junction in recent years due to declining health.
Jamie Patricia Hamilton was born Dec. 2, 1927, in Meeker, the daughter of James Emerson and Elizabeth (Patrick) “Aunt Lizzie” Hamilton. She received her education in Meeker and following graduation from Rio Blanco County High School attended Mesa Junior College for two years.
On May 2, 1948, she was united in marriage to Cecil J. Bates in Glenwood Springs. For many years Jamie co-owned and operated Avery’s where the coffee pot was always on and ladies came in daily to share the town news.
A faithful member of St. James’ Church, Jamie helped serve many funeral dinners and harvest dinners through the years.
She loved to help with Wednesday school, serving cookies to many area youngsters.
Jamie was a longtime member of Meeker Chapter No. 100, OES, and bowled on several women’s and couple’s leagues. Her husband was instrumental in building the Meeker Golf Course and Jamie loved to spend time on the links and was active in the Ladies Night group.
Jamie was a member of the “Chicken Salad Club” and loved getting together, playing cards with the girls.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Shari Bates of Grand Junction, three granddaughters, Viki Pitcher and her husband Jim of Englewood, Desirae Bates, a student at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Tammi Scritchfield and her husband Justin of Grand Junction, as well as one great-granddaughter, Isabella.
At the time of her death Jamie was anxiously awaiting the birth of two more great-grandchildren.
Jamie is also survived by a very special cousin, Mary Hossack of Meeker, her nephew Wayne Joslin and a niece Karen Stick as well as a large extended family.
Cecil preceded Jamie in death on Sept. 1, 1981. She is also preceded in death by her son, Jim, in 2003, her parents and one infant brother.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 11 from St. James’ Episcopal Church. Interment was made in the Highland Cemetery under the direction of Cochran Memorial Chapel.
