Longtime Rangely resident Ila A. Powell, 97, died Nov. 7, 2008, at the Rangely District Hospital.
Ila Alma Bowman was born in Grand Junction, Colo., on March 18, 1911, to Grover and Nellie Bowman. Ila spent her childhood on East Douglas Creek. She attended schools in Dragon, Utah, Rangely and Fruita, Colo.
Ila married Lou Leslie Powell on Oct. 7, 1927. Les and Ila lived for three years in Tacoma, Wash., returning to homestead on Douglas Creek. Through the years they raised 10 children, Wallace, Louise, Walter, Rowena, Cork, Leslie Ann, Diane, Jayne, Willa Kay and Nona.
Ila was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, her husband Les, one son, Wallace, two daughters, Louise Lewis and Diane GeBauer and two grandsons, Mike Lancaster and Tim Lewis.
She is survived by five daughters, Rowena Pennell of Brush, Colorado, Leslie Jones of Ft. Myers, Fla., Jane Kuck of Rangely, Willa Powell of Meeker, Nona Powell of Rangely and two sons, Walter of Rangely and Cork of Dinosaur. She is also survived by 30 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, 32 great-great grandchildren and a multitude of friends.
Ila spent her life raising her kids, grandkids and any other kids that came along. She was known for her homemade bread and cinnamon rolls. She often told people if they left her home mad it might be her fault, if they left hungry it was theirs.
She was an active member of Eastern Star. Her favorite place in the world was Douglas Creek. She was a good mother, a wonderful grandmother and a good friend.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 12 from the Meeker Ward Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Interment was made in the Rangely Cemetery. Cochran’s Rangely Mortuary was entrusted with the arrangements.
