Rangely takes second, sixth at home; takes fourth, fifth at Craig invitational

RANGELY — The Panther track and field team is getting stronger and stronger as the season progresses. Recently, the team hosted its second meet of the season and competed in Craig at the Clint Wells Invitational. The Panther Open was held on Tuesday April 21, and the Clint Wells meet was last Friday.
phsptrgtrack11At the Panther Open, the boys finished in second place with 128 points behind Rifle with 134 points. The girls’ team, with six athletes, finished in sixth place with 66 points.
Audrey Hogen led the Panthers by winning both the 800-meter (2:30.18) and 1,600-meter (5:58.97) races.
Victoria Phelan placed in four events and had two personal records. Victoria jumped 32-10 in the triple jump for a second place finish and ran 18.82 in the 100 hurdles for second. She also placed in the long jump (15-6 1/4) and was the 300 hurdle champion (53.43).
Marie Morton placed in three events; the high jump, shot put and discus. Her best performance was in the discus where she was second with a throw of 76-2.
The boys were led by thrower Nathan Pearce who won the shot put (40-3 1/2) and the discus at 124-0. Rangely also had success in the hurdles. Levin Boulger was second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.63.
Logan Osborne was third in the 110s and the champion of the 300 hurdles (45.50). Freshman Ethan Peacock also placed in the 300s with third place and a 47.02.
Other boys placing high in the meet were Peter Walz, second in the 100 dash (11.67); Michael Morton, second in the 400 dash (53.80) and second in the triple jump (39-0); Kanden Brady, second in the long jump (19-9). Hyrum Byers also had a nice meet by running his best time in the 1,600-meter run (5:00.10) and placing third in this race as well as the 3,200-meter run. In all, the boys set 12 personal records at this home meet, which is a tremendous effort.
phsptrgtrack21In Craig, at the Clint Wells Invitational, the girls finished in fourth place with 69 points and the boys were in fifth with 74.
Top performances came from throwers and jumpers.
Marie Morton threw her best in the shot put with a throw of 32-2 1/2 and a third-place finish. Nathan Pearce also had success in the shot throwing his best at 43-9 3/4 and finishing in second.
In the jumps, Kanden Brady jumped his best in the long and triple jumps. His long jump of 20-2 1/2 finished third and the triple jump of 40-11 was good for a fourth place finish.
Michael Morton also jumped his best of the season in the triple jump and finished in fifth with a 40-1/2 effort. Victoria Phelan finished in second place in both the long and triple jump events.
Audrey Hogan finished in second in the 1,600 run and was the 3,200 run champion. Michael Morton was the 400 dash champion, and Hyrum Byers finished second in the 800.
Next week I’ll report on the Hayden Invitational as well as the league meet to be held in Kremmling. The Panthers will then advance to the region and state meets to wrap up the season.
