Obituary: Martha Slagle

Martha Slagle
Martha Mae Slagle, 86, of Newcastle, Wyo., died Friday, Jan. 4, at Weston Co. Health Services of pneumonia.
Martha was born Aug. 23, 1926, in the Osage oil field to Anna T. (Berdahl) Masters and Howard B. Masters. As a young girl Martha lived in Denver, Colo., and spent her summers in Wyoming with her Aunt Carrie and Uncle Roy Smith.
Martha fell in love with and was married to Fred Dean Slagle of Newcastle on Sept. 4, 1945, at Carl and Mary Slagle’s residence, by Forest Julius. They lived on the Roscoe Michaels Ranch. Later they moved to Upton, Wyo., where they raised their three children: Glenda, Vicki and Fred Jr. Then they followed Fred’s oil field career with various oil companies, including Terra Resources, to Casper, Wyo., and then to Williston, N.D., where Fred retired. Shortly after retirement, Fred’s health became a concern and they came back home to Upton, and then to Keyhole, where Fred passed. Martha later moved to Newcastle until present.
Martha was a member of the Upton Methodist Church and presently a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church of Newcastle. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and a past Worthy Matron. She also was an active member of the Ladies Petroleum Club in Williston, N.D.
Martha worked in the Upton Bank and also for William Lake at Pendexco Oil Company out of Osage. In later years she enjoyed delivering meals with Meals on Wheels.
She lived for her family: her husband, her kids and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed boating, dancing, bowling, golfing and entertaining others and playing dice and cards, especially Skip-Bo and afternoons with her bridge club. She was an accomplished seamstress and she liked to crochet. She enjoyed word find puzzles at night while winding down in her family room. She had a love for people and wasn’t afraid of hard work. Her kitchen was home to many shared meals with colleagues, family and friends.
She is survived by her sister Kathy Watson of Newcastle; half-sister Pat Montgomery of Denver, Colo.; her children, Glenda Willadson of Newcastle, Vicki (Ray) Legerski of Casper, Wyo., and Fred Jr. (Carla) of Rangely, Colo.; nine grandchildren, Scott Willadson, Ron Willadson, Cody Legerski, Leslie (Nic) George, Wayne Legerski, Mandy Slagle, Dustin (Jena) Slagle, Torie Slagle and Tessa Slagle; seven great-grandchildren, Tylin Ellerton, Jake Willadson, Margaret George, Carter Anthon, Cameron Anthon, Trevor Lipton and Dylan Slagle; and many nieces and nephews who knew her as Aunt Marty.
Services were held Jan. 9, 2013, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Newcastle followed by a coffee reception.
The family suggests memorials to BREAD and/or Newcastle Senior Center, both addressed as 629 Pine St., Newcastle, Wyo., 82701.
