• Arthur Lloyd entertained the Sophomore Class at a “hard times party” Saturday Nov 4th.

• Not since October 1980 has this section of Rio Blanco County seen as much snow in one Saturn as that of last Saturday and Sunday of 15 inches and -4 degrees.

50 years ago

• Top honors went to Meeker again Monday when the Meeker FFA students, participating in the Colorado River Valley District FFA Farm Mechanics Contest in Rifle, came in first place.

• November 14th is HONEY SUNDAY in Colorado and the Meeker Jaycees will be covering the town and country selling a jar of honey for $1. Proceeds from the sale will be used locally for handicapped children.

25 years ago

• A Colorado state grand jury investigation has resulted in the grand jury indicting a Mobile, Ala. taxidermist for 18 Colorado felony charges on October 11, 1996. Donald Ray Hawkins was indicted with 16 counts of willful destruction of wildlife and two counts of forgery.

• Orval LaBorde is one of Meeker’s best known veterans from World War II. In fact, he’s one of the best known veterans from this part of the state, so it was fitting that he was chosen to be the grand marshal of the Vet’s Day parade in Grand Junction.

50 years ago

• The first county hunting accident of the 1971 big game season occurred on November 1 on Strawberry Creek when David Stegall of Whales, Florida accidentally shot himself in the left leg below the knee with a pistol.

• Eleven young ladies, including four from Rangely, have returned their applications of entry in the annual Tri-County Junior Miss Pageant sponsored by the Craig Jaycees.

• Two men suffered serious burns after an explosion at an oil production facility in Willow creek area of the Piceance Basin while Big Red Hot employees were heating oil tanks with a hot oil truck and propane torch when a drip gas ignited.

• The Colorado Division of Wildlife is allegedly dumping raw sewage into the Buford area drinking water and into the White River near Buford, and has been doing it for decades, yet refused to do anything about it.
