October busy at MES

MEEKER I There were several happenings at Meeker Elementary School during October, including fire safety, drug awareness and fun that involved putting an emphasis on reading.
Meeker Volunteer Fire Department came to the school and taught each class about fire safety and what to should do if we ever have a fire. The students were very receptive to the firemen. They also learned what it takes to become a volunteer fireman.
Red Ribbon Week and Drug Awareness took place at MES on Oct. 21-24.
Meeker Police Department taught each class about drug awareness and how to make good choices.
MPD Lt. Phil Stubblefield and Officer Wes Severson, with his drug dog, Niko, answered questions, gave demonstrations and instructed the students on what they need to know for their safety.
They also talked about being safe on Halloween.
One day of Red Ribbon Week was devoted to bus safety as many more students are riding the bus.
The Scholastic Book Fair was Oct. 23-24 in conjunction with the parent/teacher conferences. The fair was very successful. It was open for a total of 18 hours, and during that time more than 1,197 books were sold. That averages out to be 215,568 practical reading minutes that are taking place in our community.
The winner of the grand parent drawing was Teresa Ellis.
A huge thank was given by school officials to all of the agencies and volunteers who contributed much of their own time and effort to make each one of these events a success.
