Hughes, Shelton win events in Frank Woodburn meet

MEEKER I “We had a great day in Grand Junction,” Meeker track coach John Strate said of his team’s performance in the competitive Frank Woodburn Invitational track meet held in Stocker Stadium, which featured 18 teams, most 3A, 4A and 5A teams.
The Meeker girls’ team finished 12th and the boys were 14th in the competitive field, but the Cowboys had a couple of the best athletes, including junior Sydney Hughes and sophomore T.J. Shelton, who both won events and placed high in others.
Hughes won the triple jump, placed third in the long jump and was eighth in the 300-meter hurdles. Hughes won the triple jump with a mark of 33-5 and jumped 16 feet in the long jump.
Shelton won the 100-meter dash by .01 seconds, finishing in 11.38, and he placed fifth in the 200-meter dash.
“It was the first time T.J. has run the 200 this year, so he should be able to take a lot of time off on that one as well,” Strate said.
Strate expects others to take time off and increase their jumping distances, mentioning several performances.
“Jacob Henderson ran a solid 300-meter hurdles race (49.41) and considering it is the first time he has ever ran it, he did well and we look forward to good things coming from him,” Strate said.
“Julia Eskelson continues to improve in the 1600-meter run and Kash Atwood had a nice throw in the discus of 108 feet. The warm weather made for numerous career best times and distances.”
Meeker senior Jeremy Musgrave made his high school track debut Saturday and finished seventh in the high jump.
“Jeremy should improve drastically each week in his jumping events,” Strate said.
The Cowboys will compete in two meets this week, Coal Ridge on Friday and Glenwood Springs on Saturday.
