Panthers undefeated in weekend tournament

RANGELY | Teams from seven schools battled for dominance at the 2021 Rangely Shootout, featuring 19 basketball games in three gyms over two days. On the boys’ side, the Rangely Panthers walked away with bragging rights as they went undefeated over the weekend. In other play, Ouray defeated North Park 49-45, while North Park downed South Park 46-29 and Nucla 46-32. Nucla and De Beque both earned wins over South Park — Nucla outscored the Burros 45-35 and De Beque prevailed 46-33.

The Panthers picked up their first win of the season on Friday against the Ouray Trojans with a 39-20 victory. Rangely’s defense smothered Ouray for three quarters, limiting their scoring to three players. Hayden Hart led Ouray’s scoring with 10 points, while Rangely was led by Timothy Scoggins with 10 points and nine rebounds. According to Rangely coach Kyle Boydstun, “Our offense wasn’t prolific, but our defense performed as expected. This group plays with high intensity and you could tell they had fun.”

Rangely’s final opponent was the Nucla Mustangs. The Mustangs came into the tournament with five boys and fought valiantly. Already stricken with injuries, the Mustangs lost another player to a knee injury in their loss to North Park. Their fifth player was able to start both remaining games however, allowing Nucla to finish tournament play and pick up a victory over South Park, who, to their credit, played Nucla four on four. Nucla took on the Rangely Panthers in much the same fashion, with both teams starting one player to the side. The Panther defense again proved to be too much and the four on four action opened up the floor for Rangely resulting in more scoring opportunities. Rangely defeated Nucla 62-32 as Kenyon Cochrane and Timothy Scoggins led the Panthers with 14 points and 12 points, respectively. Point guard Keihlin Myers had an all-around game as he pitched in six points, seven rebounds, seven assists, five steals and 10 deflections. Coach Boydstun added, “We had to postpone our game with Telluride as they couldn’t make it due to weather, but I was very pleased with our effort and teamwork this weekend.” The Panthers will look to reschedule with Telluride, and their next game will be against Vail Christian in Rangely on Jan. 7.

The Rangely JV team also went undefeated at the tournament, winning two games with North Park. They concluded the day with the Rangely JV team taking on the Rangely “C” team. The coaches split the squad evenly with the “Green” team defeating the “White” team by only four points. This game was particularly entertaining as it featured a “showdown,” pitting older brother Luis Quintana against his bigger younger brother, Marcos. All who attended enjoyed the intense competition that followed. While Luis’s team won, we think Marcos may have had the first and last laugh — yes, you had to be there.
