• A local business man made a very good suggestion the other day, namely: the construction of a footbridge across the river at the foot of Sixth street and the building of a trail from the south side of the river to the top of cemetery hill. We think the suggestion an excellent one, and as an enterprise of this character has always to be taken in hand by some responsible person or agency, we would refer it to the cemetery association for consideration.

• After an uneventful, but perilous trip to the wilds of Thurman creek last week, Harry French is again enjoying the gayeties of city life and regaling the regular boarders at the Miller house with Munchausen-like stories of his hunting exploits in the Sleepy Cat mountain region last summer.

• About one o’clock Thursday afternoon the fire alarm bell was sounded. The light plant was on fire. The fire boys responded promptly and the blaze was quickly extinguished.

• It is becoming everyday more apparent that bureaucracy at Washington is the real power.

• Edwin Morgan has sold his fine ranch on Ninemile Hill to Frank Pollard.

• G.W. Tilden of lower Powell Park was a business visitor to town Monday. Mr. Tilden reports that an effort will be made the coming summer to get a road surveyed and building on the Thomas Mesa which will connect with Thurman Creek road up Hay Gulch and accommodate farmers on the south side of the river and also give an outlet to the extensive oil shale territory in that vicinity.

• Reaction in Meeker to President Nixon’s executive order banning the shooting, poisoning or trapping of eagles, hawks, coyotes, falcons and other kinds of predators on federal lands last Tuesday ranged from pleas for alternative means of control to outright fear the order may have sounded the death knell of the sheep industry.

• After it was determined it was too dangerous for a helicopter to lift the three yearlings from their entrapment in deep snow near the head of Fawn Creek, Si Berthelson and son Wiley and Ellis and Jerry Eliasen made the decision to go in after the animals with snowmobiles.

• In the wee hours of Feb. 12, this snow gun began making snow for the Meeker Winter Games. For two nights, two Steamboat Ski Corp snowmakers will churn out the white stuff for the horse contests on Main St.

• Eighteen young Mexican men hopped aboard their van in from of Meeker Town Hall to complete their journey to wherever they were going when Meeker police took them into temporary custody. The Immigration & Naturalization Service declined to pick up the youthful works, many of whom appeared to be in their teens, so the police freed the men. In the past two weeks, authorities in the Meeker area have apprehended 76 illegal aliens taking the Highway 13 shortcut from I-70 to Craig for the trip east. The day after these men were sent on their way, State Trooper Rob Baughman apprehended a vehicle loaded with 17 more undocumented workers. Meeker apparently is a major route for moving illegal aliens into the midwest, and this has police angry.

• Congratulations to the Panther basketball team from the Middle School and their coaches Don Collins and Joel Hogan for winning the Craig tournament after going undefeated all season.

• Susan Toles has been named Rangely High School’s Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow for 1972.

• Tim Mantle, primary operator of Mantle Ranches, Inc., struggles to maintain a way of life that directly contradicts the edict of the National Park Service: Dinosaur National Monument, in a pristine, unimpaired, natural state.

• Rangely has a shortage of good new home construction sites, says Trustee Lance Stewart. To remedy the situation, he wants the Town to install curbs and gutters for 24 new home sites in La Mesa. He says that local realtor Cecil Loollar has at least six parties interested in building on La Mesa lots.

• Sweetbriar, a new local business, held a Grand Opening ceremony on Monday, Feb. 10. Kathy and Teresa Staley and mMia Pauls, proprietors, were joined by Chamber representatives Beth Hairston and Cheryl O’Neal for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
