Lady Cowboys win two, lose one at districts

MEEKER I The lady Cowboys made it to the finals in their districts last weekend and sealed their trip to regionals.

In game one the Cowboys took on West Grant for the second week in a row and took the second victory, 64-44. 

“We shot very well all weekend,” commented head coach Jamie Rogers, “and it showed in our wins.”

In game two, the semifinals, Cowboys met Plateau Valley. In their previous matchup the Cowboys fell 43-39. In the semifinal of districts the girls came out strong dominating the first half 28-14. They held their lead and secured the victory 42-36 to advance to the finals.

The win against Plateau Valley secured the Meeker’s spot in regionals and they were playing not just to win in the final game, but also for seeding it the bracketing. 

Soroco had previously beaten the Lady Cowboys 60-47, they were seeded number one in districts, and had just come off of a 61-24 win over Rangely.

In the first quarter the Rams came out strong, but wavered towards the half allowing the Cowboys to creep up. In the fourth the Cowboys came within four points, but in the end fell 40-48.

“The girls played their hearts out the entire tournament,” Rogers said, “they were aggressive, rebounded well and shot well.”

District TOURNEY Stat Leaders

• Hailey Knowles, 26 points, 25 rebounds, 10 steals

• Ainsley Selle, 4 points, 17 rebounds, 5 steals

• Savannah Mendenhall, 12 points, 9 rebounds, 5 steals

• Ellie Hossack, 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals

• Hadley Franklin, 7 points, 13 rebounds, 5 steals

Meeker now looks forward to a regional tournament for both the boys and girls hosted by Limon. Regionals consists of four teams, it is single elimination and only the winner will advance to the elite eight at the state tournament to be played at the Budweiser Events Center. 

The lady Cowboys will open with Wray, who sits 11-11 overall and are ranked 11 in the state. The Cowboys are currently No. 22 according to RPI. The game will be aired via NFHS at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
