MEEKER I Meeker High School senior Sarah Kracht was recently selected for a Gold Key award in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition that recognizes the work of exemplary high school students. As a regional Gold Key nominee, Sarah’s work will advance to a national stage in New York City for further judging, and her prints can be found at the Denver Art Museum for a few months.
Sarah’s inspiration for her work stems from her love for her hometown. As a senior, she wanted to showcase something that was true to Meeker’s small town spirit. “When Mr. Quinn told me how long I had until the scholastics judging, I figured I had a little bit of time before I had to submit something. And then he whipped out an 18 by 24 linoleum block and it shocked me. When Mr. Quinn and I were deciding what to do we really wanted to do something special to my hometown because it’s my last year, and we decided on a cowboy to represent the old men and the people in our community that have made this a community, because just like the name they are a ‘dying breed.’ To me this artwork means a lot. It really brings joy to me because I’ve always lived in Meeker and I know many of the older men that live here and it warms my heart to know that they are still here and that they are still doing what they do.”
