• The curfew bell was hung in place over the fire department building on Thursday and its shrill tones will be heard in Meeker from now on. The bell will serve for fire alarm purposes as well as to warn the rising generation that it is time to “scoot.”
• Water was turned on yesterday and those wishing to use it for graden or domestic purposes had better see Mr. D.T. Riley, superintendent, to whom water rents will be payable in advance.
• Ed Fairfield is now pulling the ribbons over eight horses in one of the Hugus freighting outfits.

• Among those who think the country is going to the dickens is the office holder who is afraid he is going to be defeated for re-election.
• There is no substitute for butterfat.
• Orville Clinard, as president of the class, presided with dignity. The class prophecy was illustrated by shadow pictures of the real characters portraying the events foretold, which added much to the force of the poem. The “Tatler” is the school paper started by the seniors this year. It gave much of the inside school history and was appreciated by the audience.

• A pair of “look-alikes” who celebrated their first birthday Saturday, May 6, are Kirk and Kerry Conrado, twin sons of Mr. and Mrs. Brian Conrado of Meeker.
• Oil shale industry could start next 6-7 years.
• Mary K. Villa, junior student at UNC in Greeley, was a member of the Symphonic Winds, an ensemble group which was on tour in Montana last week. Mary plays the French horn.

• Meeker Mayor Bill Dunham, County Commissioner Joe Collins and Hospital Administrator Jim Murphy turned the first spades of dirt for the new clinic and wellness center at Pioneers Hospital on May 9.
• Western Slope Communications still plans to build and operate a large radio station in Meeker. That’s the word this week from David Johnson, general manager of the Grand Junction company that owns a number a radio station in western Colorado.

• This year’s royalty for the Rangely Days Rodeo are Miss Kathy Caldwell, first attendant; Miss Dena Nickson, Queen; and Miss Billy Jean Bruckner, second attendant.
• The committee is asking for support for this year’s parade, “How the West Stays Young,” a theme submitted by Jana Stewart.
• Education is a funny thing. At 18 we know all the answers — 35 years later even the questions confuse us.

• The Rangely Times is happy to welcome a new addition to their staff. Daniel P. Chesnet has filled the news editor position, which has been vacant for over a month. Chesnet is a 1995 graduate of Mesa State College.
• Colorado Northwestern Community College held their 1997 Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 10. One hundred twenty-eight students earned degrees or certificates.
