Billy Don ‘Bill’ Harp
Billy Don “Bill” Harp, 77, of Meeker, Colo., passed away at the Grand Junction VA Medical Center on April 23, 2014. He was born November 10, 1936 in Rifle, Colo., to Harry and Florence Parker Harp.
He was the youngest of five children. He attended Rio Blanco High School and was graduated in 1955. He enlisted in the US Army and served for three years from 1955-1958. Bill came home from the military to marry Shirley Ann Mitchel and to work at the Harp Transportation Line, the family business. Together they had two children: son Lance Harp and daughter Lisa Bunning.
Bill’s interests included spending time with his family, camping, traveling, hiking and enjoying the beauty of nature. He could fix about anything and developed a reputation of being the “go-to guy” for help or advice about diesel mechanics. After the family business was sold, he worked for Colowyo Coal Co. until he retired in 1998. One of the highlights of his retirement was a trip to Alaska and traveling on the Alcan Highway.
Bill is survived by: his wife, Shirley; son Lance (Sylvia) Harp of Azle, Texas; daughter Lisa Bunning of Rock Springs, Wyo.; grandchildren, Brandon and Morgan Harp, Kelsee Harp, Jason and Melinda Wright, Justin and Malena Wright; great-grandchildren, Chandler Wright, Kaden Wright, Colby Wright and Connor Harp; a sister, Dorothy Larsen; sister-in-law Arda Harp; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, brother “Bud” Harp, brother “Ike” Harp and sister Phyllis Miller.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to The National Alzheimer’s Association (ALZ.org), 225 North Michigan Ave Floor 17, Chicago, Ill. 60601. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Blackburn Meeker, Rangely and Vernal Mortuaries.
