Letter: Are thank you notes obsolete?

Dear Editor:

I have given countless gifts of money and needed items to high school graduates over the past five years. I have received only one thank you note from a special needs graduate that painstakingly typed, cut and glue the written gratitude inside a note card. The other graduates just didn’t bother.
If graduates can sit down, address, fold and mail an announcement to me, I’m sure they could write a thank you note, too. Or am I just old, out of date and out of touch? Is written gratitude a thing of the past? Let me know, so I don’t waste energy hoping for appreciating that isn’t felt.
