Hurricanes swim in Western Slope Championship

Rangely Hurricane Patrick Scoggins won five events and the High Point trophy in the 13-14 division at the Western Slope Championships. Nineteen Hurricanes participated in the event and many finished in the top 10.

RANGELY I The Rangely Hurricanes swim team entered 19 swimmers in the Western Slope Championships held at the El Pomar Natatorium on the Colorado Mesa University campus in Grand Junction.

The coaches call the meet a “fun and exciting event” where “Rangely athletes demonstrated great sportsmanship and showcased their swimming prowess.”
Swimmers had to qualify for the meet and went up against the best swimmers from Grand Junction, Montrose, Steamboat Springs, Craig, Vail, Aspen, Cortez, Glenwood Springs, Telluride and a “sundry” of others.
Qualifying Rangely swimmers included: Aguirre Jackson, Angelina Fortunato, Ezekiel Gianinetti, Ryann Mergelman, Travis Cotes, Elinora Gianinetti, Corbin Lucero, MacKenzie Manchester, Joseph McKay, Caleb Noel, Colton Noel, James Scoggins, Mary Scoggins, Timothy Scoggins, Patrick Scoggins, William Scoggins, Andrew Slack, Jeffery Slack and Kenzie Varner.

According to Rangely coaches, “All the swimmers had great races and shaved time off their best times,” and several had top-10 performances and one high-point winner.
Angelina Fortunato placed sixth in the 25 back in the 8-and-under group, Ryann Mergelman was ninth in the same race and Colton Noel placed eighth in the 100 breast in the 10-and-under division. William Scoggins had an eighth place finish in the 15-and-over 50 free, Timothy Scoggins had a ninth place finish in the 200 free, eighth in the 50 back and 50 breast and was fifth in the 100 back in the 9-10 division.
Patrick Scoggins placed in the top four in nine events, including five first-place finishes, was second in three races and fourth in another, which added up to the high point trophy in the 13-14 age division. Scoggins will now represent Rangely and his team in the Colorado State Championships this weekend in Fort Collins at the EPIC Center.
