We’ve had July weather for the past few days, and indications point to a continuation of same during the coming week.
The town authorities request that parents and others see to it that children keep away from buildings when shooting off their firecrackers.

The Fourth of July celebration yesterday went off well and proved to be the best one day celebration ever staged in Meeker. The largest crowd of spectators ever were in attendance.
A large number of Axial people were registered at the Meeker hotel during the week.
The Meeker-Rifle road is now in fine condition, especially the Rio Blanco end of it. The Garfield end is a bit “chucky” in places, but it will be subject to this trouble until it is graveled or has a layer of crushed rock placed on it.

Whipped by high winds and fed by dry timber that hasn’t seen rain for several weeks, a fire blazed along the rim of the China Wall formation northwest of Meeker Monday. Uncontrolled for several hours, firefighters had to wait till evening when the winds died down before bringing the 50-acre fire under control.
Alva Wear of Meeker received a thirteen-year Safe Driving Award at the Greeley Gas Company annual employee Awards Dinner. Wear’s award represents accident free driving in the thirteen years he has worked for the company.
Denise Marie Jordan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Jordan, celebrated her first birthday on June 6 at Rio Blanco Ranch. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Harry Jordan, and her great-grandmother is Mrs. Ruth Jordan, all of Meeker.

Ed Coryell and Joseph Cardile spent all day serving as umpires for the girls fast pitch softball games in Meeker over the weekend. It’s hot, hard work, and coaches, officials, and others who volunteer to give up some of their free time to work with kids and give them something fun and constructive to do during the summer, are performing a valuable community service.
The 1999 Meeker Range Call Rodeo Queen is Miss Miranda Jackson. Miranda’s parents are the very proud Danny and Brenda Jackson.
Calamity Jane and Barbwire are a comedy team and will perform at this year’s Range Call for the first time. Calamity’s Chuckwagon Adventure will explore the funny side of the old west, and will open the Independence Weekend festivities on July 2 at the fairgrounds.

Captain Clark Mobley of Norfolk, Virginia has been visiting this past week with his parents, the Dave Mobleys, and his brothers.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Elam, and daughter Brenda, recently returned from Page, Arizona where a family reunion was held at the home of the Bill Elam’s.
The Larry Mattocks of Elk Springs have moved to Rifle.

On the Fourth of July, the Recreation Center will be having a coin toss at the swimming pool. The time is at 12:30. Ages for the coin toss are toddlers to 15 years of age.
Air Force Airman Jaime R. Powell has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is a 1998 graduate of Rangely High School.
On July 8, community leaders will meet with the Rio Blanco Board of County Commissioners in another effort to begin to hammer out an economic development for Rangely and the county.
