Spartans begin softball season

RANGELY I The Spartans softball team had a great opening fall weekend starting Sept. 5. The freshman-stacked team started their fall schedule facing the 2014 RMAC Champions, Colorado Mesa University.

The Spartans pitching staff consisting of sophomores RiLee Lutz, Kellie Percival and freshman Kirstin Roundy, who came out strong in both games for the Spartans—only giving up seven runs in 14 innings to the former champs. In game one the Spartans lost 5-0 and in game two the Spartans lost 2-0.
Sept. 6 and 7 the Spartans hit the road and played in Tooele, Utah, in a warm-up tournament hosted by competitive softball teams from Utah and Nevada. This tournament was a chance for colleges to play against travel ball teams and get some recruiting in as well as working on their own teams.
The Spartans played four games in Tooele and walked away with a couple of wins. Sophomore Jaisha Webb hit .412 on the weekend with one double and one home run. Freshmen Courtney David and Makensie Culligan added to the home runs with one a piece.
This past weekend the Spartans traveled to Alamosa, Colo., to play in the Adams State University tournament. They opened up game one against Adams State and managed to win 5-3. The Spartans also played CSU-Pueblo, and Colorado Christian University.
The Spartans played very well against CSU-Pueblo but could not push enough runs across in the end. The final game in the tournament was against CCU. The game was back and forth through seven innings and thanks to a base hit by freshman Courtney David, who hit .517 on the weekend, pushed the tying run across the plate in time for the game to end at 4-4.
This weekend the Spartans will host their alumni game on Saturday at 1 p.m. on their home field. The following weekend the Spartans will head to Lamar Community College to play in the Fall Classic Tournament.
Head coach Ysidro Jimenez is excited for this upcoming year. He knows where he wants to go with this team and is looking forward to a tough two weeks before the Spartans face Region 9 teams in the Lamar Classic.
