Miss Percy Beard returned to Meeker last Saturday evening, after an absence of nearly two years, in attendance at Campbell University, Holton, Kansas. Miss Beard is in poor health, the result of over study.

The general land office has finally permitted the Utah sheep men to run their flocks on the open spaces on the Uintah forest reserve.

No man can enjoy health as long as he has the toothache.

Hog prices have been good as of late. Every little bit helps. 

P. A. Hausser of Strawberry was in town the forepart of the week. He reports that the crickets are nearly to his place and have about ruined the crops of some of his neighbors.

Several mild attempts at rain appeared in Meeker section first three days of this week, but in each instance, the best J Pluvious could do was to sprinkle. However, Thursday, forenoon saw a heavy rain and hail storm in Meeker and vicinity. It was a big help to growing crops.

Asphalt for the Douglas Pass road repaving project is expected to be available by AUg 12 or possibly a week earlier, according to Larry Corn of Corn Construction.

It was a tense wait for A. Oldland & Co. manager Mike Washburn early Monday morning as he waited for police to see if he was another victim of the Meeker burglars who broke into three Meeker businesses two weeks ago. Glass was strewn inside for 30 ft which indicated somebody hit the window with a club or something but no object was found. No pry marks were found on the safe, and nothing else was reported missing.

Mr. and Mrs. Gerhard Isaac of Denver came Monday afternoon for a few days’ stay at their ranch home up White River.

A felon who stole a new pickup truck to escape a manhunt near Meeker early last week is still on the loose and apparently is still driving the stolen truck. The 51-year-old, who was described as “creepy” by a Meeker bartender, was cornered in a wildlife refuge east of Meeker on July 26 after police discovered he was wanted in Florida. He has a long criminal record including convictions for assault, attempted murder, possessing automatic weapons, theft, and burglary.

A Meeker police car sustained approximately $1,000 in damages on Aug. 2 when a 15 year old girl smashed into the vehicle in an attempt to elude the police.

The Meeker Recycling Center hosted its first hot dog BBQ July 27th. It was one of the ways the MP2 Committee came up with to thank the people and businesses who have supported the recycling project.

One must choose between making money and spending it. There doesn’t seem to be time to do both.

Young people of Dinosaur have built a big “D” on the hill north of U.S. 40 highway as a summer project.

Chevron Oil announced on Aug. 3 that it will sell the massive Weber Sand Unit in Rangely. If a buyer can’t be found by late 2000, the unit manager said, the field might just be shut down. 

As part of a regional grant, Rio Blanco County nurse Diane Banta has released information that Betty Baldozier has been named dental program coordinator for the Miles for Smiles program that will be coming to northwestern Colorado this fall.

The Recreation and Park District in Rangely received a grant for an ice skating rink.
