This year is the 60th anniversary of the Wilderness Act. In 1919, Arthur Carhart sent a report to the federal government suggested establishing wilderness areas after spending time around Trappers Lake. Last week, Meeker Elementary School fifth graders took a field trip to Trappers Lake, hosted by the Blanco Ranger District. United States Forest Service Ranger Curtis Keetch shared Carhart’s story, students enjoyed a picnic lunch, learned about owl pellets from USFS Wildlife Biologist Andre Decalzo, fed snacks to Rosie, a USFS mule, and hiked the trails. This is the 17th year the Blanco Ranger District has hosted this field trip. Lynn Lockwood Photos.
