RBC | Yes, that’s right. It is very important to water our trees as they go dormant this time of year as it creates a readily available source of groundwater that can be used in the spring. Trees stop transpiring (losing their water through their leaves) after leaf drop so water is no longer transported from the ground source up through the trees and lost to the air. It can stay in the ground and help insulate the roots through the cold winter months and be ready for the tree to use when the snow melts and temperatures are again warm enough to start pumping the needed water and nutrients up through the trees in the spring and promotes healthy new spring growth.
If you want to learn more about what your trees are up to during the winter months and what you can do to protect them during these cold times, come attend our workshop on Saturday, Nov. 2 nd at 11 a.m. We’re going to start with an indoor talk and presentation and then move outdoors if the weather cooperates.
Our second topic will include pruning Conifers. It’s always confusing when deciding where to start and where to stop. Come get some helpful hints. Call Linda Masters at the Extension Office if you have questions.
