RANGELY | The Rangely Panthers girls’ basketball team is gearing up for another exciting season, led by a talented group of seniors. With a strong core of experienced players, the Panthers are poised to make a significant impact on the court this year.
The team will be led by seniors Miah Wren, Ashlynn Ducey, Miley Chism, Emmeree Wagner, and new to the roster this year is Emma Winder. These athletes have been instrumental in the team’s success in recent years and are expected to continue their dominant performances.
Wren, a dynamic guard, averaged an impressive 16 points per game and 4 steals per game last season. Her ability to score and create turnovers makes her a valuable asset to the team. Ducey, a skilled point guard, contributed 11 points per game and led the team in assists. Her court vision and passing skills are crucial to the Panthers’ offensive success.
Wagner, a versatile forward, is known for her strong shooting from beyond the arc and her rebounding ability. She is expected to be a force on both ends of the court. Chism, a defensive specialist, will be a key player in the Panthers’ defensive strategy. Her tenacity and hustle will help disrupt opponents’ offensive rhythm.
Joining the senior class is a talented group of juniors, including Aubrey Kenney, Aubrianna Tapia, Addison Scott, and TyLee Fielder. These experienced players will provide depth and versatility to the team. Sophomore Rachel Elder, who showcased her potential last season, will also contribute to the team’s success.
Coach Mergelman is optimistic about the team’s potential. “We have a great group of girls this year.”
The Lady Panthers opened their basketball season with a dominant 54-38 win over American Heritage High School.
Miah Wren led the way with 13 points, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. Ashlynn Ducey was close behind, adding 11 points, 5 assists, and a team-high 9 rebounds. Miley Chism and Aubrianna Tapia each contributed 7 points, with Chism grabbing 9 rebounds and Tapia securing 5. Addie Scott chipped in 6 points and 7 rebounds.
Emmeree Wagner and Aubrey Kenney rounded out the scoring with 5 points apiece. Wagner also recorded 4 rebounds and 4 steals, while Kenney added 2 steals.
On Saturday, the Lady Panthers defeated Intermountain Christian School of Salt Lake City, 60-26, in their second game of the season.
Wren again led the team in scoring with 33 points, shooting 12-of-19 from the field and 4-of-10 from beyond the arc. She also contributed 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Ducey added 9 points, 1 rebound, and 2 assists. Tapia posted 5 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Scott tallied 4 points and 5 rebounds. Wagner finished with 7 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists.
The Lady Panthers’ strong offense, combined with solid defense, allowed them to control the game from start to finish. With the win, the team earned the tournament championship and has set a high standard for the season. The Lady Panthers will host their first home game on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
