MHS holds third annual Empty Bowls fundraiser

MEEKER |  This past Tuesday, Meeker High School held its Empty Bowls fundraiser during the girls’ and boys’ basketball games against Roaring Fork. This year marked the third year of the event, with proceeds benefiting the Meals on Wheels program through Pioneers Medical Center.

The fundraising goal for this year’s event was $2,000. The total amount raised that night has yet to be announced.

Meeker High School teacher and FCCLA adviser Mullins emphasized the importance of the event.

“It is so important to take care of the community and those who support our students in everything. This is just one simple way to give back and include students and their skills in the process,” Mullins said.

For the second year in a row, the art program partnered with the event, providing handmade bowls. High school art teacher Ben Quinn led the initiative, with art students creating more than 200 bowls for the fundraiser.

“We spend about five weeks carefully crafting a wide variety of styles, sizes, and colored glazes. The bowls are a Cone 6 mid-fire stoneware that are microwave- and dishwasher-safe,” Quinn said.

Students of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced potters, contributed to making the bowls. Quinn shared what the event means to him and why he continues to participate each year.

“This is a fun way for our students to create work for a wonderful cause and be engaged with our community,” Quinn said.

The event, which was led by FCCLA students, was another success. The soup was served warm, and the fundraiser was a hit for both the FCCLA and the art department. Organizers are already looking forward to next year’s event.
