Meeker School Board discusses hiring, student celebrations, and policy updates

MEEKER | The Meeker School Board held its regular meeting last week with community members in attendance. Present were Board President Bill DeVergie, Secretary Hanna Borchard, and members Ann Franklin, Joe Nieslanik, and Tony Theos. Vice President Tom Allen and Heather Sauls joined virtually.

The meeting began with student celebrations. FCCLA and FFA officers Aimee Shults, Hayden Garcia, and Autumn Stallings shared experiences from the University of Northern Colorado’s Future Teacher Conference. Shults credited the program for shaping her career aspirations, while Garcia highlighted the value of career and technical education (CTE). Stallings emphasized FFA’s impact on her school experience and future in agricultural education.

Sixth-grade teacher Claudia Bullen read a letter of gratitude, reflecting on her teaching journey and mentorship from Kris Casey.

Meeker High School introduced new clubs, including a debate club, National Art Honor Society, Chess Club, and a Dungeons & Dragons club. Principal Amy Chinn outlined the club approval process.

The board discussed conflicts of interest for teachers and coaches offering private services and reviewed proposed changes to the exchange student policy, including extended deadlines and a cap of four students. Updates to the expulsion policy were considered to distinguish possession from distribution of controlled substances.

Superintendent Chris Selle updated the board on hiring an elementary school principal, noting only two viable candidates and the possibility of extending the search. The district is also considering reassigning elementary teachers due to a middle school resignation.

After discussing staffing and policies, the board entered an executive session on student discipline. The next meeting is scheduled for March 10, 2025.
