RBC | Coloradans who qualify for the Low-income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) still have time to apply for help with their home heating bills. The deadline to apply is April 30.
So far this heating season, nearly 80,000 people across the state have received an average benefit of $355. LEAP provides a one-time payment made directly to the utility company on behalf of eligible households. This assistance helps Coloradans cover a portion of their winter heating costs, freeing up money for other essentials like food, medicine, and rent.
Theresa Kullen, LEAP manager, emphasized the importance of this assistance, stating:
“The choice between heating or eating is real for too many in our communities. LEAP-eligible families can get up to $1,000 in energy assistance depending on the type of heating fuel, household income, and other factors. We encourage anyone who thinks they may be eligible for LEAP to apply by the April 30 deadline.”
In addition to energy bill assistance, LEAP recipients may qualify for furnace repair or replacement in emergency situations, as well as weatherization services following a home energy audit.
Eligibility requirements include:
• Household income up to 60% of the state median income (e.g., under $78,060 annually for a family of four).
• Responsibility for paying home heating costs directly to a utility company or landlord.
• At least one U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident living in the household.
