RANGELY I The Rangely High School girls’ basketball team played Paonia Friday night and suffered from a lack of aggression from the opening minutes.
RHS head coach Quinton Kent said of the game, “Paonia came out aggressive and we came out timid. That really sums up the whole game.”
In the first quarter the Eagles jumped to a 15-3 lead, but Rangely battled in the second quarter scoring 11 points against a tough defense. At intermission Paonia was up 35-14.
The second half was close, as the score for the final 16 was 27-24, leading Paonia to the 62-38 victory.
Rangely had managed to get Paonia into some foul trouble, and Kent said, “They play an aggressive style of defense that is hard to prepare for, and when they get in foul trouble, it doesn’t seem to matter.”
The Panthers will host Hotchkiss on Friday night and travel to Caprock Academy on Saturday.
The girls hope to use what they have learned to be successful, Kent said.
“We hope to keep learning, and, hopefully, we will build some confidence over the next month,” he said.
The team has played close with teams this year and may be a victory away from going on a run.
