Hullo friends
Last night, I found an SD card on my desk and, lo and behold, it contained all my photos from last summer’s fires. Before we get to the serious stuff, here’s my favorite firefighter appreciation poster ever.

Now, flipping back to serious. Almost a year later, here we are again. Despite fire restrictions, desperate pleas and educational efforts, a 1,400-acre, human-caused fire is burning in the Piceance Basin, triggering evacuations and road closures.
It is so dry out there it feels like a bug fart* could start a blaze. You should not need anyone — not your momma, not your grandma, and not the government — to tell you making sparks is a bad idea. That’s the first thing.

And second? Be prepared!
The most important part of preparedness is not panicking, and it helps immensely when you have a plan. So make sure you’ve got your Ps ready to go! Plus, if you’re a landowner, stop by tomorrow’s free Fire Preparedness Bootcamp at the Palooza. There’s also free pulled pork sandwiches and plenty of giveaways because it is WREA’s Annual Membership Appreciation Dinner!
Whew, that was a lot of P’s in one paragraph.
Here’s more from this week’s edition.

Meeker Library is hosting a blood drive July 21. Jared interviewed Library Director Kristina Selby about the event this week as U.S. blood banks face emergency shortages.
If you can donate, please do!
“Our vision is always very community-focused, very community-centered. Programs like this can really highlight that and bring the community together.”

Efforts to locate a missing Rifle man were suspended after several days of searching by first responders and concerned citizens along Highway 13. Continue to be on the lookout for any signs of Sam, and call 911 immediately if you see him.
Organized search efforts have been temporarily suspended for 20-year-old Samuel Bower, an at-risk Rifle man who has been missing since Wednesday, July 8.…

7/9/2026 @ 12:58 p.m. Report of a child headed down the river from the Circle Park area in a blue kiddy pool came in to dispatch from PD, thankfully already on the scene dealing with unrelated matters.
The child was retrieved from the water near 10th Street Bridge and reunited with mom.

This week, I asked a pretty awkward question for a newspaper editor to ask:
What, exactly, is the point of a newspaper in 2026?
Also, I said that I am good at a few things, and I would like to clarify it’s approximately three things and I am not even sure what they all are, but it’s probably basically the skill set of a hobbit from last week’s newsletter. #secondbreakfast

Happy and happyish …
- HAPPY! Check out this story about Bones the Killer Cat, who JUMPED OUT OF A TRUCK along I-70, miraculously survived, AND was reunited with his family. (Summit Daily)
- Happyish: despite seemingly every news agency ever talking about 💥explosive diarrhea💥, cyclospora cases are not rising in Colorado at this time. Wash your hands and wash (the bug farts off) your fruits and veggies and you should be fine. (9News)

This week’s secret offers a peek into the funhouse that is my brain.
Over the Fourth, I spilled Dippin’ Dots all over my Nikon. I cried about it. (That’s not the secret. I cry about a lot of stuff.) I was suuuuuper worried I had ruined my camera forever, but I decided to let it dry and see what happened.
Then I forgot all about the incident (hmm, that seems to be a theme of mine) until I tried to take pics this week and discovered all the buttons and knobs were stuck down by dried Dippin’ Dot goo. I carefully dug some of it out, and everything seems to be working properly-hooray! However, my search for 91% isopropyl alcohol for further cleaning, as recommended by The Google, was fruitless.
While I was looking, I did discover that I own approximately 27 floss … flosses? Flossi. Floss … thingies.
That’s more embarrassing. Maybe that should be the secret.
Anyway, don’t spill Dippin’ Dots on stuff. Also, don’t buy floss just because it’s on sale.
But DO floss!

And don’t start fires. And sign up for emergency alerts. And read your community newspaper, because it’s good for you AND your brain!
Ok, that’s enough free life advice for one email.
Bye now!
Caitlin
