Can I just say, firefighters are really cool, which is probably why I kept telling my very kind media escort, Stephen, dorky things like like, “Wow, you guys are cool,” and, “The coolness factor is just so high in here.”
Thank goodness I already know I’m not cool or that would have been embarrassing.
In all seriousness, though, everyone I spoke with WAS really cool kind and knowledgeable and I learned a ton, even though I dorked it up in the process.
Going on a ridealong with a fire team remains solidly on my bucket list. Here’s hoping coolness is not a prerequisite. 🙃

Because we have to go to print soooooooo early now, the numbers in this week’s edition for both PL Gulch and Keystone are from Tuesday’s updates, but the latest (and last) PL Gulch Fire update put it at 95% containment (hooray!).
A Type 3 Team took over the Keystone Fire this morning. They confirmed via email they are in the process of moving to an alternate location to accommodate Fair while they work this incident.

7/17/2026 @ 7:34 p.m. Goldilocks was nowhere to be found after a baby bear took over a cabin inspection on County Road 115. The cub was seen climbing out of a window just as the owner pulled in, but once the coast was clear, it wandered right back inside-apparently deciding the accommodations were just right.

Today’s secret is that I debated publishing this week’s column for a good long while, like ’til last possible second, despite my commitment to not overthink thigs.
It’s unnatural to show weakness and be up-front about brain things like anxiety. Maybe it’s stigma. Maybe I’m just a championship overthinker. I don’t want to cast doubt on editorial decisions, or be flippant about 140 years (!) of community history, or discount all the lovely people cheering us on every week.
But I also think honesty is so much better than manufactured bravado. And if I can share melty popsicles, Dippin’ Dots disasters and floss hoarding with you all, I don’t see the need for a professional “persona” to hide behind. So there ya go.
Feeling like I’m gonna get eaten by a lion face is now permanent. Exciting! 💃
Unpolished candor is not everyone’s cup of tea, but hopefully it’s someone’s (fifth) cup of coffee. ☕
