Memorial Day: Remembering Our Fallen Troops

While several area residents, members of the Meeker VFW, the Meeker VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the American Legion looked on at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Peter Kiser, left center, tosses a wreath into the White River with the help of auxiliary member Dawn Jastrem. The wreath honors Meeker-area soldiers who gave up their lives in service to the United States of America.

The wreath honors Meeker-area soldiers who gave up their lives in service to the United States of America.

At 8 a.m. Monday, the public was invited to join the men and women from the Rangely Veterans of Foreign Wars Post at Hefley Park in downtown Rangely for the laying of a wreath at the Veterans Memorial. Other items such as flowers and an American flag were also laid at the foot of the statue. Despite light rain, approximately 35 members of the public came out to remember those who who gave of their lives in service to America as well as those still serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Throughout much of Highland Cemetery in Meeker on Monday, the number of Meeker residents who had served in the military is denoted by a small American flag placed on the graves of veterans. A strong percentage of those buried in Highland Cemetery have served in the Armed Forces, and many friends and family members were on hand at 10 a.m. at the cemetery to honor and recall those who gave up their lives in service to this country.
