Highway traffic through Glenwood Canyon returning to normal now

RBC I The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) reopened the westbound lanes of Glenwood Canyon on Tuesday from mileposts 117 to 126.
Striping operations have been completed in the westbound lanes, allowing crews to dismantle the traffic control out of the head to head formation it has been in since July. Both eastbound and westbound lanes will still experience some single lane closures for work to be completed.

“This is a huge milestone,” said CDOT project engineer Adam Cornely. “This project is essential to the long-term health and safety of the highway, and returning traffic to its original formation marks the final phase of work.”
The original scope of work planned for the project will be completed by Oct. 31; however three weeks of additional work have been added. This work includes replacing two bearing pads on eastbound I-70 west of Hanging Lake Tunnel, and repairing a barrier wall that was damaged during a rockslide in June. The new work will be completed under single lane closures in the original traffic formation, and is now planned for completion on Nov. 20.
Normal work hours are Monday through Friday during daylight hours. Some night and weekend work is anticipated. There is a 24/7 wide-load restriction of 10 feet, which will remain in place through the end of this week. From Oct. 23 through Nov. 20 there will be a 12-foot width restriction in place.
This work is part of a $7.3 million project, which was awarded to Truesdell Corp. The state-of-the-art polyester concrete overlay completed in the westbound lanes functions as a waterproof barrier, preventing corrosion between the concrete and the bridge deck. This effectively extends the lifespan of the highway and will reduce the frequency of repairs and impacts to travelers. In addition to bridge deck repair, the project includes 3,000 linear feet of bridge rail replacement, and construction of a rock fall fence to mitigate the risk of falling rocks.
CDOT would like to remind motorists to Slow for the Cone Zone. Fines will be doubled within the work zone. If you have questions or concerns about this project, please call the project hotline at 970-930-8009
