Rangely distance runners have year’s best meet; Scoggins to state

RANGELY I The Rangely High School cross-country team ran its best meet of the year at the 2A Region 4 Track Meet in Delta on Friday. The regional meet is where it is determined who will move on to the state track meet.

In order to move on, the runners need to place in the top 15 or have their team place. Unfortunately, Rangely will only have one runner advance to state—in Patrick Scoggins.
“I am very pleased and proud of all my runners; they ran hard,” Panther Head Coach Beth Scoggins said. “I couldn’t have asked any more from them.”
The boys’ race took off fast and furious with Patrick Scoggins leading the Rangely runners.
The two lead runners from Telluride and Mancos left the other runners, but Patrick was able to settle in with the next group of boys from around the Western Slope for the first mile, then he picked up the pace, leaving a few behind.
With 600 meters left, Patrick and another sophomore from SoRoCo were the only two left to battle it out for third and fourth places. Scoggins was able to outkick the other runner by .08 of a second and, in doing so, placed third with a new personal best time of 16:14.01. Comparing his time on the same course at the beginning of the year, Scoggins was able to take a full minute off his time.
Coach Scoggins said, ”Patrick is a hard worker and it shows. He has made great improvements and continues to amaze me every time he runs.”
Brennan Noyes was the next runner; he placed 53rd with a time of 20:18. He improved by 1 minute and 23 seconds over earlier this year.
Austin Ficken placed 55th with a time of 20:37. He has improved his time by 2 minutes 11 seconds.
Landon Rowley ran a 22:51, placing 67th in the race, but he has taken 3 minutes and 8 seconds off his early-season time.
Cameron Filfred continues to work hard and was able to run a 23:31, placing 69th. However, he has taken a tremendous 4 minutes and 44 seconds off from the beginning of the year.
The girl’s ran amazingly well also, all of them having improved. They will be a team to watch out for next year in the 2A division.
Leading the Rangely girls was Savannah Nielsen, who placed 17th, just two places out of going to state. She ran a 21:37, 51 seconds faster than earlier in the year.
“Savannah Nielsen has ran hard all year and has been a wonderful team leader and role model,” Scoggins said.
Phalon Osborn ran a 22:05 placing 22nd. She has improved by 2 minutes and 42 seconds.
RaeLynn Norman was just two places behind her at 24th with a time of 22: 42. She has been able to take 3 minutes and 18 seconds off her time since the beginning of the year.
Miekka Peck ran a 29:00, placing 37th and taking 5 minutes and 26 seconds off her time from early in the season.
Patrick Scoggins will be running at the state meet in Colorado Springs on Saturday.
