25 years ago

  • Almost 100 Meekerites took time Monday evening to attend the public forum which featured a question and answer session among the seven candidates who are running for the town council and mayor positions.
  • Alison Nicole Frank and Becca Ann Whitley turned 1 in March 1984.
  • Pat Mares returned home from visiting his brother, Mike, in Los Angeles, Calif. The brothers toured Hollywood, Graumann’s restaurant, the beach and enjoyed the roller skating facilities.

  • This past week work was completed on the wrecking of the frame building on the rear of Frank Kennedy’s lots and facing Sixth Street. This building was a landmark in our community, built over 60 years ago. Last fall a deal was completed whereby the White River Electric bought the three lots from Mr. Kennedy for their new building.
  • Miss Shirley Rector wed Mr. James Jones March 19, 1959. Miss Dixie Lundberg wed George Jones March 19, 1959.
  • Home from Colorado University for spring vacation are Bill Metzger, Diane Fredericks, Mr. and Mrs. Danny Seely and Miss Leanna Carroll.

  • Unlimited money to loan on farm security. Low interest. For particulars apply to F.E. Sheridan.
  • You will save money if you buy your hat from Mrs. Brown.
  • Lost — A set of false teeth at the Masonic banquet. Finder return to Dr. Williams and receive reward.
  • J.C. Cherry, wife and daughter, from Uinta, Okla., arrived in Meeker this week. Mr. Cherry and family are here to locate, and as they are very desirable people, it’s hoped they will find a suitable opening.

  • The RE-4 school district faced a financial crunch for the school budget, prompting the replacement of two certified library people with non-certified personnel and the reduction of one full-time psychologist, one gifted and talented educator, one elementary teacher and one music teacher. The money to be trimmed from the 1990 budget amounted to about 11 percent.
  • Ranchers were urged to use “all available methods” to control the coyote population.

  • The new chamber of commerce office, next to the Snak Bar, in Rangely hosted an open house.
  • Our thanks to the town for sweeping Main Street last weekend. It is a great improvement and one appreciated by all.
  • The Panthers won their baseball season opener 7-3.

  • The Saturday Afternoon Bridge Club made spring hats using Easter baskets, chickens, rabbits, phonograph records, hula hoops, Hawaiian bananas and a miniature Uintah refinery building.
  • Richard Brenton, Tom Rabourn and Noel Crown were selected for the all-tournament basketball team at the conclusion of the Northwest A league tournament in Craig.
  • Vernal lease operators found oil in two Rangely area test wells.
