Panther boys split games over the weekend

RANGELY I The Rangely High School boys’ basketball squad had one win and one loss during the weekend, defeating Caprock Academy on Saturday after falling prey to Hotchkiss on Friday.

On Friday night, the Panther boys played Hotchkiss, and Rangely came out and kept pace with the Bulldogs, holding a 21-18 lead at the end of the first period.
The second quarter saw problems developing for the Panthers as Hotchkiss had a big offensive run, scoring 19 points and holding Rangely to just nine.
Coach Boydstun said, “Our defense was too porous in the first half, and while the boys responded well again in the second half, it wasn’t enough.
“We have to do a better job defensively throughout the entire game,” he said.
The Panthers played some hard ball in the third period and outscored the Bulldogs 19-12, closing to within six at the end of the quarter, but Hotchkiss proved to be a tough opponent, and they claimed the 69-60 victory.
Patrick Scoggins led the team in scoring with seven points and with rebounds as he claimed nine boards. Brady Kaulan had six points and grabbed seven rebounds, Brennan Noyes added four points and eight rebounds and Austin Ficken had three points and six rebounds. Troy Allred rounded out the scoring with one point but he grabbed five rebounds as well.
Rangely played Caprock Academy on Saturday and came away with an impressive 62-44 victory.
Coach Kyle Boydstun said, “Our defense was lackluster in the first half again, but Patrick Scoggins led us in the second half with some great defense and easy buckets.”
Scoggins had 10 points and six rebounds, Brennan Noyes added five points and six rebounds and Brady Kaulan had three points.
Rangely played Meeker on Tuesday night, but the results were not known by press time.
Rangely will travel to Baggs on Friday to play Little Snake River, then wrap up the week with a home game Saturday against Plateau Valley with games scheduled for 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.
