MHS makes a difference at state FCCLA conference

Several members of the Meeker High School Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Club recently attended the state FCCLA Convention, winning many medals for their work. Taking place in Denver, members had opportunities to interact with students from around the state and showcase the leadership skills they developed throughout the year. Meeker High School brought 12 students to the conference and experienced all the conference activities. Linda Lombardi, third from the left, was chosen vice president of public relations for the Colorado FCCLA state officer team. This is the first time in nine years Meeker has had a state officer.

MEEKER I April 2 was an inspiring weekend of competition, recognition and making new friends for Meeker’s FCCLA members who attended the 2016 Colorado State Conference in Denver.

Members had opportunities to interact with students from around the state and showcase the leadership skills they developed throughout the year. Meeker High School brought 12 students to the conference who experienced all conference activities.
On Thursday, students experienced the Youth Expo, where they could speak with colleges and exhibitors who helped boost the energy level for the entire conference. The evening was filled with a welcome from Brooklyn Buhre, 2015-2016 Colorado state president of the FCCLA, as well as a great opening session in which students were introduced to current state officers, state officer candidates and special guests, and the discovered how one action can make a difference in their life.
Students were off their feet and excited to hear from the keynote speaker, Yahya Bakkar, who spoke about how members can have more than words; Yahya used beatboxing to get his message across. Yahya’s message sounded close to home as many students from Meeker are looking into their future and the idea of higher education.
On Friday, all the hard work the Meeker chapter put into competitive events finally paid off; it was competition day! Students were able to compete in 40 events.
Meeker High School was proud to have students compete in 11 events. One particular student competed in Promote and Publicize FCCLA, where she created, maintained and updated regularly an FCCLA Facebook page. The idea was to communicate regularly with the Meeker community.
Awards for their achievements were given out Saturday, and every Meeker High School competitor received a medal. (The Meeker total was four gold medals, six silver medals and one bronze medal.)
Linda Lombardi was chosen for the position of vice president of public relations for the Colorado FCCLA State Officer Team. This is the first time in nine years that Meeker has had a state officer. Congratulations, Linda.
Looking ahead to the next FCCLA opportunity, Madeline Amack (second place in career investigation) and Caitlyn Shepherd (first place in promote and publicize FCCLA) are able attend the National Leadership Conference in San Diego, Calif. on July 3-7.
Meeker High School FCCLA is ready to continue on our FCCLA journey with the Ultimate Leadership Experience!
