Homecoming parade in Meeker this Friday promises to be bigger and better than ever

Meeker | Meeker’s Homecoming week got more exciting this last weekend. The girls’ softball team won the required game at the regional playoffs—so they’ve qualified for the state semi-finals to be played in Aurora Friday (and finals Saturday, if they win a second game Friday). Their first game is at 12:15 p.m. with a possible second game at 3 p.m. Softball head coach Briana Williams said “it’s exciting to watch this team see more of their potential, ignore the things they can’t control and be successful at their own game. They are a talented team and gradually gaining confidence.” What else remains of Homecoming week at this point? Today is school spirit day. All school-related critters are expected to celebrate their loyalty by wearing their black and gold gear. The second parent-teacher conference time slot is tonight from 4-8 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. Parent-teacher conferences are also in their second day at both the elementary school and middle school toda during the same time frame. The Peach Fuzz (football team) volleyball game is in the high school gymnasium at 4:30 p.m. today. The first thing up tomorrow, Oct. 21, will be the cross-country team regionals which is away, in Delta, at 10 a.m. Homecoming parade festivities begin with a $6 per plate public barbecue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the courthouse lawn with all proceeds to benefit the MHS athletic programs. Parade marshals Kris and Henry Arcolesse, owners of Ma Famiglia Italian restaurant, chosen by the students, will lead the Homecoming parade which ensues at 1 p.m. on Main Street. Student council teacher-advisor, Kathleen Kelley, says the parade will be bigger this year with at least four more floats than usual. Principal Amy Chinn also reported that she is pleased the parade will be announced over the PA system from the Meeker Hotel by Joseph Cardile. The parade will be followed by the Homecoming pep rally on the courthouse lawn. The girls’ volleyball teams play the Paonia Eagles at 4, 5, and 6 p.m. in the gymnasium. The football game against the Eagles is at 7 p.m. at Starbuck Stadium. The halftime show will include the high school marching band, presentation of royalty and Homecoming week contest winners. On Saturday, the girls’ volleyball teams will play the Rangely Panthers in Rangely at 1, 2, and 3 p.m. The Homecoming dance will be at 9 p.m. in the administration building gymnasium and will include presentation of royalty as well. The dance will be followed by “Shenanigans,” sponsored by Parents Providing Alternative Activities, from 12:30 to 4 a.m. Sunday in the auxiliary gym at the high school. The JV football game against Rangely JV scheduled for this past Monday was cancelled. A makeup game against Glenwood Springs has now been scheduled as a home game Monday, Oct. 24 at 5 p.m. Homecoming royalty nominations (four from each class) and their parents are: Class of 2020 (freshmen)—Jeni Kincher, daughter of Stacie and Fay Kincher; Josh Dinwiddie, son of Karen and Mike Dinwiddie; Kolbi Franklin, daughter of Heather and Blaine Franklin; and Elijah Deming, son of Meredith and Obie Deming. Class of 2019 (sophomores)—Lila Klinglesmith, daughter of Jackie and Lenny Klinglesmith; Stephen Walsh, son of Lisa and Tom Walsh; Krissie (corrected from last week’s report of Kassie, with apologies to both) Luce, daughter of Shawn and Chad Luce; and Brayden Woodward, son of Melissa and Les Woodward.
