The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago

– We don’t believe the Lord ever intended to combine a preacher and a politician. No man can serve two masters and do it successfully.

– The prisoner, who has been in the county jail for some weeks charged with horse stealing, made his escape last Saturday evening. It is evident the prisoner had outside help.

– A box social and dance will be given at the Coal Creek school house on Friday evening, November the 3rd, under the auspices of the Catholic Ladies society. Everybody invited.

– The offerings at St. James’ church last Sunday, for the Armenian-Syrian relief amounted to $20. The Sunday school added $10 from their funds, making a total of $30. Subscription lists will be found at the Bank of Meeker and the First National Bank for those who were unable to give last Sunday.

– We intended having a write-up this week on the unique and enjoyable entertainment given by members of the women’s club, last week, for the benefit of the Public Reading Room; but—look at the crowded condition of our pages this week.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago

– A 24-year-old copyreader for the Rocky Mountain News, Ralph Lynn Morey, because the third gunshot fatality of the 1966 Colorado hunting season Thursday night.

– Daylight Saving Time for 1966, one of the most cussed and discussed pieces of time in this county, will end this weekend. The issue of daylight saving time for future years will be voted on in the general election on Nov. 8.

– Installed in the library last Thursday were 18 new study carrels. All the tables were taken out and in their places several carrels were installed.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago

– Following the recommendation of their planning commission, the Rio Blanco County Commissioners signaled their approval of Chevron’s $3,081,000 pipeline replacement and compression station project this past Monday afternoon.

– Admitting the wind conditions last Saturday morning made it a little “chancy,” Jim Riegel nevertheless became the first person to ever para-sail off the TV tower down to Meeker. Riegel was originally planning to land on the Sixth Street field but the wind conditions prevented him from parasailing that far and instead, he settled for a safe landing in Dave Smith’s field west of town.

– The high country is really picking up the snow as last Thursday’s storm dropped anywhere from 12-16 inches, Sunday night’s storm added several more inches while the Tuesday/Wednesday storm added another foot of snow.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago

– Harry Peacock attended the recent meeting of Bombardier Ski-Doo dealers in Denver. Peacock has the dealership here. The Ski-Doo was first developed in 1956 as the “ski-dog” to replace the dog team for the hunter and trapper. Ski-dooing has now become the fastest growing winter recreation for families in the North American snowbelt.

– At the Campus Theatre: “My Fair Lady” starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.

– The Dinosaur carnival proved great fun for the grade school children. The cake walk, dart throwing, hit the can, bean bag and penny pitch, fortune telling, country store, ball toss, hamburgers, coffee and pop netted $162.

Rangely Times — 25 years ago

– The Goff Trading Post and the site of the last skirmish between the Utes and whites in Rio Blanco County are destination for a field trip sponsored by the Rangely Museum Society.

– Five new personnel on Re-4 staff: Don Comstock, Clint Ashmore, Mark Jansen, Vanesa Holly and Dana Handy.
