Panthers earn PRs at Bulldog Invitational

RANGELY | Despite being on spring break the Rangely Panthers track and field team headed to Delta for the Hotchkiss Bulldog Invitational. They were able to take 14 athletes and all competed well. There were many athletes who reached a new personal record (PR) and many improved from the previous meet in Rifle. The freshmen were more relaxed at this meet and were able to perform better.
The Rangely Panthers have three boy throwers and seven girl discus throwers as well as eight girl shot put throwers. With that many throwers the girls are having to have throw offs during the week to see who will be competing since at most meets there is a limit of four athletes per event for the team. The girls are working hard to be the ones who get to throw at the meets. It is fun to see the competition between them and how they challenge each other. For the girls this week Breanna Davis threw both shot and discus which she PR’d in both events. For shot she placed eighth with a throw of 30 feet 1 inch, while in discus she threw 69-5. Elena Forbes got to throw at this meet and showed great improvement from last year. She was able to PR in both discus and shot. For discus she improved by three feet with a throw of 61-1 and by six feet in shot with a throw of 24-11. Kaylee Mecham keeps improving in the shot put with a throw of 23-3.75 which is a foot farther then last week. In discus she was able to throw 41 feet. Miekka Peck was able to throw the discus 79-2 and then throw the shot for a season’s best of 26-2. She also ran the 100-meter dash in 16.70. Brady Bertoch was able to throw the discus for a throw of 57-4. Riley Boydstun was able to PR in both throws this week. For the discus he PR’d by more than nine feet for a throw of 91 and then by two feet in shot with a throw of 32-1.5. Austin Ficken led the boy throwers with a throw of 39-9 and placed fourth in the shot then was able to place 10th in discus with a throw of 109-1 Cameron Filfred was able to PR in the shot with a throw of 32-6.5 then threw an 84-6 in discus. The throwers also put a relay team together made up of Boydstun, Forbes, Filfred and Ficken and placed third.
Sarah Connor ran her first meet after knee surgery. She competed in the 100 dash with a time of 15.74. Chloe Filfred made her debut in the 800-meter run with a time of 3:27.02. Zoey Peck was busy running the 100, 200-meter and jumping the long and triple. She was able to jump 12-9.75 and 27-8.25. For the 100 she ran a 15.15 and a 31.91 in the 200.
Only two runners competed for the boys and they were Patrick Scoggins and Marshall Webber. Scoggins gave the high jump a try and was able to clear 5-6 and placed sixth. He also ran the 100 dash in 11.76 placing first, the 200 dash in 24.83 placing ninth and the 400-meter dash in 51.81 placing second. Webber ran the 110-meter high hurdles getting a new PR of 19.02. He also ran the 300 hurdles with a time of 47.38 and then gave the 200 dash a try and was able to run a 26.55.
The Panthers will be in Cedaredge on Saturday, April 1.
