New volleyball coach gets first home win

MEEKER | Greg Cravens, Meeker’s new head volleyball coach, earned his first home win last Saturday in his new gymnasium, as his team defeated the DeBeque Dragons in three straight games. Meeker is currently 5-1 and will play in Grand Junction Friday then host Vail Mountain Saturday.
The lady Cowboys swept the Dragons in three games, including a dominating 25-9 opening win, followed by a 25-14 victory, then won the third game and the match with a 25-20.
Meeker junior Julia Dinwiddie led the team with eight kills, while classmate Krissie Luce finished with six and seniors Brittney Adams and Sydnie Main each had three kills.
Coach Cravens said senior Caleigh Morlan “turned her ankle” Wednesday, “So we turned to Brittany Adams and Allison Moon to step in and both were ready for the task. Adams had a serving ace with her three kills and Moon finished with six digs.”
“Addie Joy has been working hard on her serving and all of her hard work paid off Saturday with a team leading four aces,” coach Cravens said of the junior’s serving.
Senior Lila Klinglesmith finished with four digs and she had an ace serve. All of Meeker’s varsity team got to play, including seniors Michaela Jones and Natalie Simonsen, juniors Kolbi Franklin, Kirsten Brown and Kassie Luce.
Meeker’s JV team also won its match against the Dragons and they will play in a tournament Saturday in Grand Junction.
“The JV team is going to get plenty of time on the court, as they will play four matches in five hours,” coach Cravens said.
Meeker’s varsity will play Caprock Academy Friday in Grand Junction, then host Vail Mountain Saturday, starting at 2 p.m.
