MHS softball moves into top 10 rankings

MEEKER | The Meeker High School softball team won two three games last week, including a come-from-behind win against the Delta Pirates in its Homcoming 2017 doubleheader. Meeker, a state-qualifying team last year, is currently 12-3 and broke into the top 10 rankings last week, ranked sixth in 3A by CHSAANow.com softball polls.
Meeker played Cedaredge on their home field in Paintbrush Park, then will play a doubleheader in Gunnison Saturday, before hosting Aspen next Tuesday in the final game of the regular season.
Meeker played in Basalt last week and won 9-5 on 13 hits. Meeker scored two runs in the first inning, three in the second and another in the third, leading 6-0, going into the fifth inning, where Basalt finally scored a run. Meeker put the game out of reach with three runs in the sixth.
Senior Sierra Williams led the team with four hits in five at bats. Kenzie Turner, Megan Shelton and Victoria Lasker all finished with two hits.
Mackenzie Marshall, a junior from Craig, was the winning pitcher for Meeker against the Longhorns in Basalt.
The Delta Panthers came to Meeker for Homecoming, when the Panthers took an early lead and kept it until the sixth inning.
Delta led 2-1 after the first inning, then Delta scored two more in the second and another one in the third. Meeker scored one in the third and although they scored four in the fourth inning, neither team scored in the fifth and Meeker trailed 10-6 in the bottom of the sixth.
With two outs, Meeker started a rally and scored 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth, then held the Pirates scoreless in the seventh inning to win the game 17-10.
Gracie Bradfield led the team, with three hits in four at bats, senior Jasmine Patterson also had three hits in five appearances at the plate, while Megan Shelton had two hits, including a home run and she batted in six runs. Junior Victoria Lasker was the winning pitcher, giving up eight hits in seven innings.
Meeker easily won the second game of the double header 11-1 after five innings of play. Meeker scored four runs in each of the first and second innings, with Williams getting three hits, while Bradfield and Shelton each had two. Marshall was the winning pitcher in the second game, giving up only three hits in five innings.
The sixth-ranked Cowboys played the Cowboys from Gunnison in Gunnison Saturday in a double header, and will host Aspen next Tuesday in the final game of the regular season.
