RANGELY | Rangely Panthers boys’ basketball season came to an end Friday against Simla during the regional tournament in Meeker. The game started very fast both ways, but the Simla Cubs got a four point lead early in the game. The Panthers kept their heads and started to gain on the Cubs. By the start of the second quarter, it looked like the Panthers had settled into a rhythm. Devin Ramirez hit a couple three point shots and the Panthers were scoring at will in the post.
At the end of the half, Patrick Scoggins went coast to coast for a bucket that put the Panthers up 31-28. Coming out at halftime, the game turned into a defensive battle. The game was tied at 33 until there was less than four minutes left in the third quarter and Simla started to pull away. The Panthers struggled to score, even though they were taking open shots. In the fourth quarter, Simla continued to score while the Panthers still could not seem to buy a bucket. The Panthers were only able to score nine points in the second half, leading to an eventual 40-59 loss. The Panthers were led by junior Devin Ramirez who had 13 points. He was followed by Patrick Scoggins who added 11. Doug Denison and Cameron Filfred both had six points. With this loss, the Panthers season is over. This was the first time that the Panthers had been to the regional tournament since 2014. The Panthers closed their season with an overall record of 15-8.
