MEEKER I The Bureau of Land Management today released its preliminary environmental assessment detailing alternatives for travel management area designations within the 1.5-million acre White River Field Office in northwestern Colorado for public review and comment.
“Travel management planning is part of creating a conservation stewardship legacy in the White River Field Office,” said White River Field Manager Kent Walter. “Our ultimate goal is to identify a comprehensive travel network that strikes the appropriate balance of providing good public access with protection of sensitive areas and resources.”
The EA outlines four alternatives designating which areas within the field office would be open to cross-country motorized and mechanized use, which would be limited to designated routes, and which would be closed to motorized and mechanized vehicles.
“We value diverse opinions and encourage the public to review the EA and provide specific comments,” Walter said. “Once we have completed these area designations over the next year, we will begin detailed, route-by-route evaluations of more than 4,500 miles of routes within the field office.”

The BLM will host a public open house meeting to provide information and take written comments on the preliminary EA from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 15 in Meeker at the Public Library, 490 Main St.
