DINOSAUR | The case against two Dinosaur youth accused of breaking into the Bedrock Depot has been handed over to the Moffat County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution. Formal charges have not yet been determined.
Sometime between closing hours on July 26 and opening hours on July 27 a window was smashed at the popular ice cream and sandwich shop in Dinosaur and both cash and some merchandise were taken. Owner Leona Hemmerich estimated there was around $2,000 in damages.
New Dinosaur Town Marshal Darren Reed was brought in shortly after the incident, officially beginning his role on Aug. 1. Reed said he immediately got to work on the case, interviewing two suspects who were caught on security footage at a neighboring gas station. According to Reed, the two juvenile suspects provided a confession to the crime and the case is now in the District Attorney’s hands.
The owner of the Bedrock Depot (Leona Hemmerich) was instrumental in moving the case forward,” said Reed.
Reed comes to Dinosaur from Delta, bringing a variety of law enforcement experience including time with the Montrose Police and as Ridgway Town Marshal. For now, Reed is familiarizing himself with the town and its inhabitants saying getting to know the people he serves is a priority. “I’m here for the long haul,” he said.
Reed described his law enforcement philosophy as a community focused venture. “Police are the community and the community are the police,” he said. Reed plans to develop a community policing program within the town in the coming months.
