Sue Hicken

April 10, 1949 ~ Dec. 25, 2018

Sue Hicken was born April 10, 1949, in Kemmerer, Wyo. and passed away in Seattle, Wash., on Dec. 25. She lived most of her life in and around Denver, Colo., but moved to Meeker in October 2006.

In August 2017 she got her heart’s desire and moved to Tacoma, Wash., to be near her daughter, Michele, and her family, husband Aaron and son Logan. Sue’s son Zack moved from Colorado with her so she had reached her ultimate dream, being surrounded by her family.

In Meeker, Sue was very active in the Rio Blanco Historical Society as secretary. She also served for many years as an election judge.

She always enjoyed different crafts, but eventually put her talents to creating stained glass. Many people in Meeker have her work hanging in their windows. She was also our family historian and spent many hours compiling our genealogy. Through her hard work we have been able to trace a number of our lines back to Europe. She was the granddaughter and great-granddaughter of pioneers and immigrants.

Sue loved to travel and was always ready for a road trip whether it was to Como, Colo., to look for an ancestor’s grave or overseas to see a different country. It didn’t matter, she was ready to go. When her kids were young, she was a member of the Colorado Historical Society and all three often went on archeology digs on the front-range.

Sue loved the wild horse herds on Piceance, the birds in her yard and the deer who made her yard their home. Everyone who knew her knew how hard she had worked on her beautiful yard here in Meeker. So, too, in Tacoma did she love sitting on her patio enjoying the birds and the gorgeous spray of flowers in her new yard.

However, the most important part of her life was her children, Michele and Zack. Her grandson, Logan, now 3, became the absolute star of her life. She loved him to the moon and back. She was never happier than when she was with her family be it hiking, lounging on the beach or enjoying their company at home.

Although in overall good health, she was struck down with a massive brain aneurysm on Dec. 23. She is survived by Michele, Aaron, Logan, Zack, two sisters and a brother. Her family asks that in lieu of flowers, people donate to the Rio Blanco Historical Society, P.O. Box 413, Meeker, Colo., 81641 or Piceance Mustangs, P.O. Box 1379, Meeker, Colo., 81641.

  1. Our mom was a kind and loving person. She was silly and funny. She loved her kids and her grandson more than anything else. She was taken from us too soon and we will miss her every single day.

  2. She continually viewed the internet for historical items, books of interest, news events, etc. She had a quiet charm about her, was congenial, well liked and will be missed by many. Her family is and should be proud of her many accomplishments.

Come say hi!
