RANGELY | The Rangely boys’ basketball team travelled to North Park on Friday, Feb. 8. Spurred by a good defensive team effort, nine Panthers scored in the first two quarters, and Rangely charged to a 30-19 lead at half-time. North Park fought back in the second, but the Panthers managed to keep pace earning a 53-44 victory. Marshall Webber led all scorers with 14 points, followed by Dylan LeBleu with eight points. North Park did not have a JV boys’ team.
On Saturday, the Rangely boys hosted the Paonia Eagles. The JV boys captured a 37-25 victory behind even scoring from Ryan Richens, Justin Cudo, Austin Davis, Gabe Polley, Timothy Scoggins and Keihlin Myers. However, Paonia’s varsity turned the tables on the Panthers by applying a 1-3-1 half court trap. Rangely was unable to adjust to the pressure committing several turnovers in the first two stanzas, and trailed 44-17 at half-time. The Panthers adjustments for the second half helped them to keep pace with the Eagles, but proved too little too late as they fell 67-37. Sydney Cole led all scorers with 15 points, followed by Drew Brannan with six. Currently, the 2A boys’ district standings show Paonia tied for the second seed and Rangely at ninth. Rangely will finish out league and regular season play next Thursday through Saturday at West Grand, at DeBeque and hosting Caprock Academy.
