Changes at the Rangely PD

RANGELY | Interim Police Chief Ti Hamblin informed the board of changes in staff. Jesse Leech is in week five of his field training. Two full-time dispatchers and one part-time dispatcher have been hired and are beginning their three month training, bringing the department to full staff. When the training is completed the town will have a 24 hour dispatch center again.

Meantime, the Sheriff’s Office has been taking calls Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 7p.m. To 7 a.m.

Cadet Daniel Conner was recently sent to the police academy. His academy director said, “Mr. Conner is doing well and will be a great asset to your team.” Dispatcher Moreno received a letter of commendation for her actions on Dec. 26, 2018. Moffat County and Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Offices had a slow pursuit through Rangely involving a wanted felon. The individual proceeded to call 911 and told Moreno to tell the officer to stop following him. He wanted to get his car to Dinosaur and then said he would go to jail. Moreno was able to convince him to surrender peaceably without incurring anymore charges or being a danger to the community.

“Without her quick thinking and steady voice, I don’t think he would have given up,” Hamblin said of Moreno’s actions.

Mayor Andy Shaffer said, “Personally, I appreciate what you [Hamblin] have done as far as stepping up as the interim chief. I have heard a lot of great things that you have been doing. Me, personally, I would like to say thank you for what you’ve done and stepping up in to the position that you are stepping up into. I appreciate what you have done for this town.”

New officer Jesse Leech introduced himself to the board and provided a little background.

Snow Removal

Jeff LeBleu from Public Works/Building and Grounds, gave his summary to the board. Public Works has been busy with snow removal and redoing White River Village, among other responsibilities. Apartment 21 at White River Village is in the process of being remodeled. LeBleu also informed the board why the state is not plowing Main Street. “If they were to plow it, it would go from the middle to the curb, which will not work.” LeBleu said. According to state statute CDOT is not required to help since the highway goes through city limits.

“When they do drop the plow to help us out, they are just doing that on being good guys,” LeBleu said.

Rowdy Worm

Rangely High School juniors, Zoey Peck and Jayleen Kenney, requested a contribution from the board for Rowdy Worm, an after prom activity meant to help keep kids safe and out of trouble. The girls wanted the board to know the money the town contributes goes back into the town. The money will go toward prizes and entertainment. The students are subjected to a breathalyzer test by a local police officer as they enter the building. The board approved a $750 contribution to Rowdy Worm.
