Rio Blanco County Days Gone By

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago
• The first frost of the season hit on Monday night of this week when the mercury on the government thermometer registered 31 degrees. It had been dropping down each night since Saturday.
• Another step towards the improvement and beautifying of Meeker’s city park was realized this week, when the equipment arrived for the underground sprinkler system.
• Total enrollment for Meeker’s three schools, 703.
• Discharged from Pioneers Hospital: Mrs. Joyce Pridemore and her baby girl, Aug. 28. Mrs. Shirley Cox and her baby boy, Sept 1.
• At the Rio Theatre: “Oregon Trail” with Fred MacMurray; “Damn Yankees” with Tab Hunter; and “Enchanted Island” with Dana Andrews.
• Forty-seven students turned out for Meeker High School football, and 39 for Meeker Junior High football.
• Several new traffic signs were installed in Meeker. Stop signs at Garfield at Third, Fourth and Fifth.
• A thirsty traveler on the island of Madagascar simply stabs a Ravenala tree with a sharp stick. A pint of clear water gushes out.

The Meeker Herald — 20 years ago
• The Meeker School District established a policy on the subject of home schooling. The board came out in support of working with home schooling parents, even to the extent of part-time attendance, and the loaning of books when available. It was also established that home schoolers could attend special assemblies, such as at the elementary school, when they came up.
• Police Chief Si Woodruff suggested the town build its own dog pound, since the town was paying out almost $700 a month to take care of only about 10 dogs.
• Hundreds of yards away from the river and of no particular concern to anyone, the Army Corps of Engineers is considering classifying the proposed LynMar building site as “wetlands.” Such a designation would require a 404 permit that could take up to 90 days to process which could cause major problems for Meeker’s attempt to land the California tool company.
• The Meeker Fine Arts Council will feature “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” for the Missoula Children’s Theatre production.
• The Cowboys converted early turnovers into a 20-0 victory against Eagle Valley.

The Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• Local police officers solved a robbery here within an hour Monday when a suspect was arrested for the burglary of Al Miller’s home that night.
• All Rangely residents last week received a box of faucet washers and a booklet on lawn care included with their monthly billing from the town for water and swer charges.
• At the Rig Theatre: “Count Your Blessings” starring Deborah Kerr; “No Name On the Bullet” starring Audie Muphy; and “Imitation of Life” starring Lana Turner and John Gavin.
• New teachers on faculty in Rangely: Alice Roberts, Gerald Wolfe, Robert Haag, Irma Ledford, Janice Urrutia, Norma Williams and Arlene White.
• “Shaving is Slicker, Blade Changing Quicker … Gillette Blue Blades in handy dispenser.”

The Rangely Times — 20 years ago
• Letter to the Editor: “The saying, “You can’t fight City Hall” was well said. I know for sure you can’t compete with their full page ads. Full paged, black border, bold letters (I’m impressed) but was it free? NO! The taxpayer paid for it, which I resent.”
• Lacey Ann was born Aug. 24, 1989 at 4:15 a.m. in the Rangely District Hospital to Nelda and Robert McMullen of Rangely.
• Laura Elizabeth was born Aug. 15, 1989 at 4:28 a.m. in the Rangely District Hospital to Jerry and Patricia Allen of Rangely.
• New teachers: Ed Anderson, Keith Koespel, Cliff Reynolds, Jerry Kaltenhauser, Gene Luthman, Irmajean Barta, Don Barta and Elden Paszowski.
• At a “stimulating and successful” Septemberfest, Jeremy Brady took first place in the pie eating contest. Mark Skelton was the seed spitting winner. Roxi Long was first in the children’s division talent contest, and Casey Duncan was first overall in the talent contest.
• The letter “T” is the second most frequently used letter in books, newspapers and other printed material in English.
